86 Universities and Others Conducted Illegal Admissions, Says JAMB

An analysis of the admissions data for the 2022/2023 academic session in Nigerian universities, polytechnics, and other tertiary institutions revealed that 86 institutions conducted admissions outside the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS).

86 Universities and Others Conducted Illegal Admissions, Says JAMB

According to the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), any admissions conducted outside CAPS are illegal, null, and void.

In 2017, JAMB introduced CAPS to centralize and automate the admissions process between candidates and their chosen institutions. CAPS ensures that all tertiary institutions upload the admission status of candidates, making the process transparent and standardized.

However, in 2020, JAMB warned institutions to stop offering admissions through their own portals, describing the practice as a blatant disregard for the automated system. The board emphasized that it would no longer tolerate such illegal admissions conducted outside CAPS.

In April 2024, JAMB issued a bulletin urging candidates to reject admissions that did not go through CAPS. The statement titled ‘Cessation of Illegal/Irregular Admissions’ reiterated that all admissions for first degrees, national diplomas, national innovation diplomas, and the Nigeria Certificate in Education—whether full-time, distance learning, part-time, outreach, or sandwich—must be processed exclusively through JAMB.

The report, ‘Compiled Assessment of Institutions on Compliance with the 2022/2023 Admission Guidelines,’ scored institutions based on their adherence to the guidelines. Those with full compliance received 10 points, partial compliance earned five points, and non-compliant institutions were awarded zero points.

Our correspondent noted that 88 institutions failed to comply fully with CAPS for conducting admissions. These institutions include the University of Uyo, University of Abuja, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Yaba College of Technology, Plateau State University, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Federal University of Technology Owerri, Coal City University, Crawford University, Crescent University, Ebonyi State University, Rhema University, Borno State University, Chrisland University, Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Alvan Ikoku College of Education, and Chukwuemeka Odumegwu University.
