Bayern Munich’s long reign as champions of the Bundesliga has come to an end, thanks to Bayer Leverkusen’s win over Werder Bremen. The match ended with Bayer Leverkusen leading 5-0, and one of the standout players in this victory was Victor Boniface from Nigeria. Boniface’s performance was so remarkable that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) celebrated his contribution on April 14th.
On that same day, Bayer Leverkusen secured the Bundesliga title with their decisive victory over Werder Bremen. This win put Leverkusen at 79 points, making it impossible for both Bayern Munich and Stuttgart, who are trailing with 63 points each, to catch up even with five matches left.
The match saw Leverkusen take the lead in the first half when Victor Boniface scored a penalty, followed by Granit Xhaka extending their advantage in the second half. Florian Wirtz’s hat-trick sealed the victory for Leverkusen.
This triumph marks Bayer Leverkusen’s first-ever Bundesliga title, breaking Bayern Munich’s 11-year domination in German football. The last team other than Bayern to win the title was Borussia Dortmund led by Jurgen Klopp in the 2011-12 season.
Leverkusen’s achievement is not only in winning the title but also in remaining unbeaten throughout the season. They are on course to become the first team in Bundesliga history to achieve this feat. Leverkusen already holds the record for the longest unbeaten run in German football, with 43 matches.
The success of Bayer Leverkusen can be attributed to the collective effort of the team. Boniface and Wirtz emerged as the top scorers with 11 goals each, supported by contributions from players like Alejandro Grimaldo and Jeremie Frimpong.
Xabi Alonso took over as manager of Leverkusen in 2022 when the team was struggling in the relegation zone. Under his guidance, Leverkusen not only avoided relegation but also secured a Europa League spot for the next season.

He’s an exceptional footballer, and his connection with the team is outstanding. Last season, Osimhen led Napoli to a historic title, and Boniface has achieved a similar feat here. I’m eagerly anticipating his performance in the Champions League. However, this hinges on Bayer Leverkusen’s ability to retain their top players.
