Security forces in Abuja successfully prevented a bank robbery on Thursday, as armed robbers attempted simultaneous attacks on a First Bank branch and a police station in the Abaji Area Council. The robbers, numbering 15 and armed with dynamite, launched their assault, but met with fierce resistance from the police and military teams deployed to the scenes.
According to a statement by Josephine Adeh, spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, the joint operation led by Commissioner of Police CP Benneth Igweh responded swiftly to the incident. In the ensuing gun battle, three robbers were killed, while several others sustained injuries and managed to flee. Three suspects, identified as Usman (last name not disclosed), Nuhu Musa from Kogi State, and Muhammed Aminu from Abaji, were apprehended with serious gunshot wounds.
Tragically, one police officer succumbed to his injuries after being hit by a bullet during the operation. Another individual, identified as the gang leader, also lost his life from wounds sustained in the firefight. Additionally, an unidentified suspect was fatally attacked by a mob following his neutralization by security forces at the scene.
Adeh emphasized ongoing efforts to locate and apprehend remaining suspects who fled with injuries. She quoted CP Igweh praising the effectiveness of the joint operation and reaffirming the commitment of the FCT Police Command to maintaining security and ensuring the safety of residents, stressing that criminal activities in the area will not be tolerated.
The incident serves as a testament to the dedication and bravery of the security personnel involved in protecting the community from criminal elements, underscoring their unwavering commitment to public safety in the Federal Capital Territory.
