Former Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari, has passed away at the age of 82. His death occurred on Sunday afternoon, July 13, 2025, in London, following a prolonged illness.
The news was officially announced by his family, who confirmed that he died while receiving treatment at a private clinic in the United Kingdom. Although the family has not yet released full details about the cause of death, it is known that the former leader had been battling a serious health condition in recent months.
Bashir Ahmad, who served as Buhari’s Special Assistant on Digital Communications during his time in office, was among the first to share the news publicly. In a message posted to his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, Ahmad wrote:

According to reports, Buhari had been admitted to an undisclosed hospital in London earlier this year. Sources close to the family revealed that what was initially described as a routine medical check-up quickly escalated into a more serious condition, leading to his placement in intensive care in April.
Throughout his presidency, Buhari was often criticised for his repeated overseas medical trips, which many Nigerians viewed as a reflection of the country’s weak healthcare system. His death in a foreign hospital once again draws attention to longstanding concerns about the lack of adequate medical facilities at home.
Born on December 17, 1942, in Daura, Katsina State, Muhammadu Buhari first rose to national prominence as a military leader. He served as Nigeria’s military Head of State from 1983 to 1985 before returning to power as a democratically elected President in 2015. He completed two terms in office and left the presidency in 2023.
Just last week, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had sent Vice President Kashim Shettima to visit Buhari in London. This move, according to the presidency, was to check on the former president’s health and offer necessary support. Shettima travelled from Addis Ababa on Sunday night and arrived in the United Kingdom the following day. He was received at the hospital, where he delivered Tinubu’s message of goodwill.
As the nation comes to terms with the loss of one of its most recognisable political figures, tributes are expected to pour in from across the country and the international community. For many, Buhari’s legacy remains a subject of debate, shaped by both his military and civilian leadership roles.
More details about funeral arrangements and official statements from the presidency are expected in the coming days.
