He emphasized that his primary focus is on governance rather than political realignments.

Governor Otti’s Perspective

Addressing the recent trend of defections during a speech in Umuahia on Thursday, May 9, 2024, Governor Otti reiterated his commitment to delivering effective governance to the people of Abia State. Drawing an analogy between political parties and churches, he highlighted the freedom of choice individuals have in aligning with their preferred parties.

“Political parties are like churches, and any church that you would like to go, you are free,” Otti remarked, emphasizing the fundamental right of individuals to choose their political affiliations. He expressed a lack of concern regarding the defections, noting that they do not affect his party directly.

Background on Defections

The exodus from the PDP to the APC in Abia State gained momentum in April, with key figures such as Anthony Agbazuere, former Chief of Staff to the state’s former governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, and five former commissioners making the switch. This movement continued into May, with notable figures like Cosmas Ndukwe, the former deputy speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, also defecting.

Focus on Governance

Governor Otti emphasized that his administration remains focused on governance rather than political maneuvering. He highlighted ongoing initiatives such as the reconstruction of classrooms across the state. Otti announced that his government has initiated the reconstruction of 13 classrooms in each of the 17 local government areas, with a focus on providing 10 classrooms for primary schools and three for secondary schools.

In the midst of political shifts, Governor Alex Otti maintains his dedication to serving the people of Abia State. His commitment to governance underscores his belief in the importance of delivering tangible benefits to the citizens, irrespective of political affiliations. As defections continue to shape the political landscape, Otti’s focus remains steadfast on his mission to provide effective leadership and improve the welfare of the people.
