Abuja in Focus as APC Holds 2026 National Convention with Thousands of Delegates
Attention has shifted to Eagle Square as the All Progressives Congress begins its 8th National Convention on March 27, 2026.
The two day gathering is one of the party’s most important events since the 2023 elections, serving as a key moment to reorganize and prepare for the 2027 general elections.
With more than 8,400 delegates in attendance, alongside 32 state governors and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the atmosphere in Abuja is charged with political activity and behind the scenes negotiations.
Leadership Decisions Take Center Stage
A major focus of the convention is the selection of a new National Working Committee to lead the party going forward.
Party leaders have indicated a preference for a consensus approach in choosing candidates for most positions, in order to avoid internal conflicts.

There is particular attention on Nentawe Yilwatda, who is currently serving in an interim capacity as national chairman. The convention is expected to either confirm him in the role or present a unified alternative.

Ahead of the event, a screening committee led by Umar Namadi cleared about 30 aspirants, ensuring they meet the requirements set out in the Electoral Act 2026.
Technology Introduced into the Process
This year’s convention also highlights a shift toward digital systems within the party.
For the first time, delegate accreditation is being supported by an electronic registration platform containing over 8.4 million verified members. This system is designed to improve transparency and prevent irregularities such as fake delegate entries.

Looking Beyond Internal Elections
While leadership elections are the main highlight, the convention also serves as a platform to shape the party’s direction ahead of 2027.
Discussions are expected to cover possible amendments to party rules, strategies to respond to emerging opposition alliances, and plans to strengthen unity within the party.
President Tinubu is scheduled to deliver a keynote address, where he is expected to focus on economic progress and ongoing efforts in infrastructure and security.
Security Measures in Place

Security has been tightened across Abuja to ensure the safety of participants. The convention venue has been secured by multiple agencies, while traffic around key areas in the city has been redirected. Residents have been advised to plan their movements accordingly until the event concludes.
Why It Matters
The outcome of this convention will shape the leadership and direction of the APC in the coming years. A peaceful and well organized event would project stability, while any signs of division could influence the political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.
As delegates gather in Abuja, it is clear that preparations for the next election cycle are already in motion.
