The Nigerian Army has confirmed a minor explosion that took place in a farmland near the Mammy Market within the Ikeja Cantonment in Lagos on Monday.
Likely Cause
According to Maj.-Gen Onyema Nwachukwu, the Director of Army Public Relations, the explosion is suspected to have been triggered by the burning of refuse and other flammable debris by a farmer who cultivated the farmland. Fortunately, there were no casualties reported from the incident.
Assurance from the Army
Addressing potential concerns, Nwachukwu assured the public that despite the historical precedent of explosions within the Cantonment, the situation is under control. He emphasized that the Cantonment had recently been cleared and certified free of unexploded ordnances.
Safety Measures
The Army’s Engineers Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team has cordoned off the farmland area to conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the explosion. Residents in the general area were urged not to panic, with an assurance of their safety during this period of investigation.
