Army Cracks Down on Oil Thieves in Abia, Destroys 14 Boats

The Nigerian Army has taken decisive action against illegal oil bunkering in the Asa Community of Abia State. On Friday, army operatives destroyed 14 vessels, including eight large Cotonou boats, used for stealing crude oil. This operation took place at Isimmiri Waterside in Ukwa West Local Government Area.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the operation was led by Major General Hassan Dada, the General Officer Commanding 82 Division. During the operation, six suspects were apprehended. Brigadier General Olusola Diya, Commander of the 14 Brigade in Ohafia, accompanied Dada and stated that the suspects had been handed over to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps for further investigation and prosecution.

Major General Dada emphasized that the operation was part of the Army’s mandate under Operation Udoka to prevent economic sabotage within its joint operation area. “We have been here since Thursday, conducting operations against saboteurs trying to steal the crude oil that is the backbone of our economy,” he said.

The operation was initiated based on intelligence reports. Dada explained that the suspects were caught attempting to siphon crude oil from a pipeline. Before the troops arrived, the suspects had sunk some of the oil-laden boats in the water. The troops are currently working to recover the remaining boats.

All 14 boats were destroyed following the Army’s Standing Operating Procedure. “The individual responsible for this operation is currently on the run, but we will apprehend him in due time,” Dada assured. He also noted that this operation appears to involve a larger cartel, with the proceeds likely funding acts of terrorism.

Dada issued a stern warning: “This is just the beginning. We will continue this operation and ensure that no stone is left unturned. The Nigerian Army will not tolerate any form of economic sabotage.”

This operation marks a significant step in the Army’s ongoing efforts to combat oil theft and protect Nigeria’s economic interests.
