Better minimum wage coming, governors assure labour

The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has reassured Nigerians and organized labor that an improved minimum wage is on the horizon, resulting from ongoing discussions.

Better minimum wage coming, governors assure labour

Previously, the governors rejected the Federal Government’s proposal of N62,000, citing financial constraints that would force some states to borrow money to meet the wage requirements. Organized labor, however, remains steadfast, demanding a minimum wage of N250,000.

In response, the governors convened an emergency meeting after the Federal Executive Council postponed the minimum wage talks on Tuesday to allow President Bola Tinubu to conduct broader consultations.

Key Points from the Emergency Meeting

A communiqué released following the emergency meeting, signed by NGF acting Director of Media, Ahmed Salihu, revealed that the Forum delved into several pressing issues affecting the nation.

“The Forum discussed the new national minimum wage and agreed to continue engaging with key stakeholders to reach a mutually acceptable solution. We remain dedicated to the process and assure that better wages will result from the ongoing negotiations,” the communiqué stated.

Emphasis on Women’s Empowerment

The Forum also received a presentation from the Minister of Women Affairs on the World Bank-Nigeria for Women Project Scale-Up and other ministry activities. Members acknowledged the importance of the project, emphasizing its implementation at the state level, as initially conceived, with states being the primary obligors.

“The governors appreciate the Ministry of Women Affairs’ efforts in promoting gender equality, empowering women, and advancing social development across Nigeria,” the communiqué added.

Collaboration with World Bank

The 36 state governors underscored the significance of the World Bank-Nigeria for Women Project Scale-Up and stressed the necessity of implementing it at the state level. The governors noted that states are the primary entities responsible for the project.

Additionally, the communiqué detailed the Forum’s engagement with the World Bank team, led by Acting Country Director, Mr. Taimur Samad. Discussions included the bank’s various programs implemented in the states, such as the HOPE Series of Projects (Nigeria Human Capital Opportunities for Prosperity and Equality), Food and Nutrition Security, NFWP-SU (Nigeria For Women Project Scale Up), NG-CARES (Nigeria Community Action for Resilience and Economic Stimulus Programme), SABER (State Action on Business Enabling Reforms Program), and SPIN (Sustainable Power and Irrigation for Nigeria Project).

“Members expressed their willingness to continue providing the necessary support to ensure the effectiveness of these programs across the country,” the communiqué noted.

Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms

The governors also received a briefing from Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee. Mr. Oyedele highlighted the progress of the ongoing Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, seeking the governors’ input and support on several proposals impacting subnational governments.

“Members pledged their support for the Committee to ensure the successful implementation of these reforms and to collaborate closely to address any challenges that may arise,” the communiqué concluded.
