EFCC Considers Military Action to arrest Yahaya Bello at Kogi Government House

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has raised a serious alarm, indicating that it might resort to military intervention to track down and arrest Yahaya Bello, the former governor of Kogi State, who has been skillfully evading capture.

In recent weeks, there’s been a tense back-and-forth between the commission and the former governor.

Despite the EFCC’s attempts to arrest Bello at his residence in Abuja, they’ve encountered significant hurdles preventing his apprehension.

Reports circulating suggest that Bello might have found sanctuary within the walls of the Kogi State Government House, capitalizing on Governor Ahmed Ododo’s immunity as provided under Section 308 of the 1999 Constitution.

The EFCC has been relentless in its pursuit of Bello over allegations of financial misconduct during his time in office. Despite being summoned for court proceedings last Thursday, Bello was conspicuously absent, leading to a delay in the legal process.

During the court session on Thursday, the EFCC’s Counsel, Mr. Kemi Pinheiro, made a firm declaration to the court, affirming the commission’s unwavering commitment to ensuring that Bello faces trial, even if it requires involving the military to apprehend him.

As reported by Leadership, Pinheiro stated, “We may need to enlist the support of the military to extract Yahaya Bello from his place of concealment.

“We might have to involve the military to compel him to surrender because his immunity does not shield him while he’s in hiding.

“Nobody is exempt from the law. Immunity only extends to the governor and not to those in his immediate circle.”
