In Lagos, the Zone 2 Police Command at Onikan recently apprehended a 37-year-old individual posing as a medical doctor. This individual, suspected of possessing counterfeit certificates, was paraded before the press by Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Olatoye Durosinmi.
Durosinmi confirmed the arrest, highlighting that the Zonal Anti-Piracy Unit took action following intelligence received from the Elepe community regarding the suspect’s activities. Leading the operation, SP Mariam Ogunmolasuyi’s team conducted the arrest, seizing suspected forged certificates from Obafemi Awolowo University and the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), along with medical equipment from the alleged clinic in Ikorodu.
The suspect admitted to producing electronic copies of the certificates, revealing that he lacked legitimate qualifications from the university or the MDCN, holding only a West African School Certificate. Furthermore, he disclosed having six team members, including two trained nurses and four unskilled individuals.
Prior to establishing his clinic, the suspect claimed to have worked as a Nursing Assistant at Fabo Medical Centre in Lagos. He confessed to performing surgeries, including Cesarean sections and an appendectomy, during his three years of unauthorized medical practice.
Authorities emphasized that the suspect operated without proper medical qualifications. Durosinmi urged the public to report any suspicious activities, assuring collaboration with health ministries to combat such fraud in Lagos and Ogun States.
During questioning, the suspect revealed he provided general treatments and surgeries, having learned the trade over two-and-a-half years before setting up his practice. Despite holding only a secondary school certificate, he admitted to forging an MBBS certificate.
