Federico Valverde produced a stunning performance in the UEFA Champions League, scoring a first-half hat-trick to lead Real Madrid to a commanding 3-0 victory over Manchester City in the first leg of their round-of-16 clash. The Uruguayan midfielder delivered a classic European night for Madrid, though a missed second-half penalty from Vinicius Junior could still leave room for a City fightback in the return leg.
City started the match brightly and looked the more dangerous side early on, repeatedly targeting Madrid’s right flank. Despite that pressure, the hosts struck first against the run of play. Thibaut Courtois launched a brilliant long pass that found Valverde in space. The midfielder surged past Nico O’Reilly, rounded Gianluigi Donnarumma, and calmly finished to open the scoring.
Valverde doubled Madrid’s lead not long after. This time it was Vinicius Jr who set him up with a clever pass into the box, allowing the Madrid captain to guide a composed left-footed finish into the far corner.
The third goal was arguably the best of the night. Valverde controlled the ball with a series of quick touches before firing a powerful volley from close range, leaving Marc Guehi trailing behind.
Madrid nearly added a fourth early in the second half when Brahim Diaz burst through the middle, but Donnarumma produced a strong save to deny him. The Italian goalkeeper made another crucial intervention about 10 minutes later when he stopped a penalty from Vinicius Jr after bringing down the Brazilian forward in the box. However, the penalty effort lacked power and was comfortably saved.
From that point, Madrid shifted focus to protecting their advantage. Antoine Semenyo remained a constant attacking threat for City and forced two impressive saves from Courtois, while the Belgian goalkeeper also reacted sharply to block another effort from O’Reilly. Aside from those moments, Madrid defended solidly and comfortably held on to secure a convincing 3-0 win at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Attack

Brahim Diaz (8/10): Worked tirelessly off the ball, assisted Valverde’s goal, and came close to scoring before being denied by Donnarumma.
