In Ado Ekiti, Ekiti state, members of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) Youth Province 9 Headquarters (Palace of Praise) are rejoicing as the church recently launched a discounted food market, dubbed the ‘Jesus Market’. This initiative aims to provide essential food items at reduced rates to alleviate the economic challenges faced by its members.
The Purpose Behind RCCG’s Initiative
During the launch event on Sunday, March 31, Pastor Anthony Obinna-Ibe highlighted the pressing economic difficulties many people encounter, emphasizing the importance of the church’s role in giving back to the community. Drawing inspiration from biblical teachings, he emphasized the dual importance of providing spiritual nourishment and meeting physical needs. Pastor Obinna-Ibe stressed, “Just as Jesus Christ not only fed the people with spiritual sustenance but also attended to their physical hunger, we are stepping in to alleviate the prevailing hunger in our community.”
Affordable Prices at the ‘Jesus Market’
At the Jesus Market, various essential items are available at significantly reduced prices. For instance, a measure of garri originally priced at N1,000 is now sold for N400, while five tubers of yam valued at N9,000 are offered at N3,000. Other items, such as spaghetti and groundnut oil, are also sold at discounted rates. This initiative has already benefitted over 200 individuals in Badariya, a suburb of Birnin-Kebbi metropolis, through a medical outreach program organized by the RCCG provincial headquarters.
Nationwide Efforts to Combat Economic Hardship
In response to the nationwide economic challenges, other religious organizations are also stepping up to support their communities. Bishop David Oyedepo, founder of the Living Faith Church (Winners’ Chapel), recently announced the establishment of food outlets across the country to assist those in need. Encouraging Christians to extend a helping hand to the less fortunate, Oyedepo emphasized the importance of collective efforts in alleviating economic hardships.
By initiating such compassionate endeavors, religious institutions like RCCG and Winners’ Chapel are not only providing tangible assistance but also fostering a sense of unity and support within their communities during challenging times.
