A jury in Santa Monica has delivered a major legal blow to veteran comedian Bill Cosby, marking one of the most significant rulings in his long history of sexual misconduct allegations.
Here’s a clear look at the case, the verdict, and how it led to a $59.5 million judgment.
The Verdict
On Monday, March 23, 2026, after a two-week civil trial in Santa Monica, California, the 88-year-old was found liable for the drugging and sexual assault of Donna Motsinger in 1972.
The jury’s decision came in two parts:
- Compensatory damages: Motsinger was awarded $19.25 million. This included $17.5 million for past emotional suffering and $1.75 million for future distress, covering trauma, humiliation, and loss of enjoyment of life.
- Punitive damages: After concluding Cosby acted with “malice, oppression, or fraud,” the jury added another $40 million.
That brings the total to about $59.25 million, with some reports placing it at $59.5 million, making it the largest civil award Cosby has been ordered to pay to a single accuser.

The 1972 Incident
Motsinger, now 84, worked as a waitress at The Trident restaurant in Sausalito, California, when she first met Cosby in the early 1970s.
According to her testimony:
- Cosby befriended her and later invited her to a recording of his stand-up show, Inside the Mind of Bill Cosby, at the Circle Star Theater in San Carlos.
- During a limousine ride to the venue, he allegedly gave her wine and two pills he said were aspirin.
- She said she quickly lost awareness and drifted in and out of consciousness.
- Her next memory was waking up at home, partially undressed, realizing she had been assaulted.

Why the Case Happened Now
The lawsuit was made possible by California’s “look-back” law, which temporarily allowed survivors to file civil claims even if the statute of limitations had already expired.
Motsinger had previously spoken anonymously as “Jane Doe No. 8” in a 2005 case involving Andrea Constand, but she filed her own lawsuit publicly in 2023.
Cosby’s Response
Cosby did not attend the trial and has denied the allegations, maintaining that any encounters were consensual. His attorney, Jennifer Bonjean, argued that the case relied on speculation and highlighted inconsistencies in Motsinger’s memory.
Following the verdict, his legal team confirmed plans to appeal.
A Continuing Pattern
This ruling adds to a growing list of civil cases against Cosby. In 2022, another Santa Monica jury found him liable for the 1975 assault of Judy Huth, awarding her $500,000.
Although his 2018 criminal conviction was overturned in 2021, these civil trials continue to give accusers a path to seek both financial compensation and public recognition of their claims.
