The Federal Government has increased its proposed minimum wage from N57,000 to N60,000, adding an extra N3,000 to the initial offer. This proposal was presented on Tuesday during a meeting of the tripartite committee on minimum wage held in Abuja.

Organised labour, which includes the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has also adjusted its demand, reducing it by N3,000 from N497,000 to N494,000. Despite this slight reduction, the labour unions were not satisfied with the government’s new proposal.

According to a source present at the meeting, the labour leaders found the government’s offer inadequate. A union member, speaking to our correspondent before the meeting, highlighted the negotiation dynamics between the government and labour unions.

“This is simply a case of if they go higher, we will go lower. They need to propose something reasonable for us to propose something lower too. There is no two-way about it,” said the union member. He explained that labour leaders always convene among themselves before each committee meeting to ensure they have a unified stance.

“As long as the government is ready to present something reasonable, we will meet them in the middle,” the labour leader added.

More details will be provided as the situation develops.
