The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, has revealed a significant concern regarding the age of candidates seeking admission into Nigerian universities. He emphasized that the current trend of underage individuals, as young as 15, 16, and 17, sitting for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) is alarming. Prof. Mamman underscored the need for a minimum age requirement of 18 for university admission seekers.
Government Concern Over Underage UTME Candidates
In a recent statement made during the monitoring of the UTME in Abuja, the Minister outlined the government’s plan to address this issue. He expressed dissatisfaction with the prevalent underage participation in the examination process and announced an impending review to enforce the 18-year minimum age for admission seekers.
Insight into the Age Requirements by UTME (Jamb)
Prof. Mamman reiterated that 18 years is the appropriate age for individuals to pursue tertiary education in Nigeria. He pointed out the contradiction in observing candidates below this age threshold participating in the UTME. The Minister emphasized the importance of allowing young individuals to attain a certain level of maturity before engaging in such significant academic endeavors.
Message to Parents and Guardians
Acknowledging the role of parents and guardians in guiding their children’s educational journey, Prof. Mamman urged them to refrain from pressuring their wards into premature examination appearances. He emphasized the necessity of allowing candidates to reach a suitable level of maturity before undertaking the challenges of university entrance examinations.
Commendation for JAMB
While addressing the issue of underage candidates, the Minister also commended the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for its efforts in conducting a transparent and technologically enhanced examination process. He praised the implementation of technology, which has effectively minimized the occurrences of examination malpractice.
In conclusion, the government’s decision to establish a minimum age requirement for UTME candidates reflects a commitment to ensuring the integrity and fairness of the tertiary education system in Nigeria. It emphasizes the importance of maturity and readiness for academic pursuits at the university level.
