Nigerian Govt Declares Additional Eid el Fitr Public Holiday

The Nigerian government has decided to extend the public holiday for the Eid-el-Fitr celebration. Originally, the holiday was set for Tuesday and Wednesday. However, since the crescent moon marking the end of Ramadan wasn’t sighted on Monday, April 8 in Nigeria, fasting continued on Tuesday, April 9. Consequently, the Federal Government decided to add another day to the holiday.

Nigerian Govt Declares Additional Eid el Fitr Public Holiday

In an announcement made on Tuesday morning, April 9, the Nigerian government declared Thursday, April 11, 2024, as an additional public holiday to mark Eid-el-Fitr for 2024.

This decision was communicated through a statement from the Ministry of Interior, signed by Aishetu Gogo Ndayako, the permanent secretary of the ministry.

The statement reads:

“The Federal Government has approved Thursday, April 11th, 2024, as an additional public holiday to celebrate this year’s Eid-El-Fitr.”

Dr. Olubunmi Tunji Ojo, the Minister of Interior, expressed congratulations to the Muslim community for completing a spiritually fulfilling month of Ramadan. He also emphasized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s unwavering commitment to ensuring a safe and prosperous Nigeria for everyone.

Sultan Sets Date for Eid-el-Fitr 2024

Meanwhile, the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar, declared that the 2024 Eid-el-Fitr would be observed on Wednesday, April 10. He, also the president-general of the Nigeria Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), explained that the national moon sighting committee failed to sight the new moon across the country.

With this new update, the 2024 Eid-el-Fitr holiday in Nigeria spans three days: Tuesday, April 9; Wednesday, April 10; and Thursday, April 11.
