Nigerian Singer Rema Responds to ‘Devil Worship’ Allegations

Rema, the Nigerian artist known for his unique style, has addressed online claims suggesting he worships the devil. These rumours, he believes, stem from his bold music videos and performance aesthetics.

In a recent conversation on the Kids Take Over podcast, Rema dismissed these accusations, calling them the “craziest thing” he’s heard about himself. He explained that the imagery and colour choices in his work are purely artistic. Referring to his recent “rabbid phase,” which prominently featured red, he noted that people have misunderstood its meaning.

“The craziest thing I’ve seen online about me is that I worship the devil,”

Rema said.

He clarified that the use of red in his visuals was an artistic decision and pointed out that the same colour is admired in other contexts without negative associations.

“If you see a beautiful lady in a red dress, you won’t call her the devil, so why are you calling me the devil?” he added.

Rema also touched on the influence of his Edo heritage on his creative work, expressing frustration over how some people misinterpret it as “devilish” simply because they are unfamiliar with it.

“My culture, the Edo culture, is not widely known or represented globally,” he explained. “When people don’t understand something, they often label it as evil.”

Despite the ongoing speculation, Rema emphasized that he doesn’t feel the need to explain his artistic choices to those who misunderstand them.

“It’s literally one Google search away, and they want me to explain it?
That’s a waste of time,” he said.

He concluded by reaffirming his stance on the matter, stating that he won’t waste time justifying his creativity.

“So will I make the music, create the videos, and still come and explain it to y’all? Hell no! That’s why it’s art. You see it and interpret it for yourself.”
