Nigerians to start using three-in-one ID card August, says official

This multipurpose card integrates identity verification, financial transactions, and social services into a single platform, and it will be rolled out nationwide by August this year.

A senior member of the implementation team, who preferred not to be named, revealed these details during an exclusive interview with Saturday PUNCH.

“The commission has been diligently working towards its objectives,” the official shared. “We are on track with our plans and expect to launch the card in the coming months.”

The official mentioned that testing and deployment processes have already commenced, aiming initially for a July rollout, with August as a fallback timeline if needed.

“When deploying new technology, there’s extensive groundwork involved: configuring the card, enabling the necessary infrastructure, and conducting rigorous testing,” the official explained. “These processes are currently underway.”

He elaborated on the ongoing efforts, stating, “Deployment is progressing steadily. We’re setting up the service portal for public access, ensuring scalability, and finalizing integrations with banks to enable card functionality.”

Recently, on April 5, 2024, the NIMC announced a strategic collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Nigeria Inter-bank Settlement System to introduce a new card embedded with payment capabilities and social service functionalities.

This initiative aims to provide Nigerian consumers with enhanced service options and improve service delivery through innovation, cost-efficiency, and increased competition.

The new identity card will include a National ID card with banking features, a social intervention card, and an optional ECOWAS National Biometric Identity Card.
