Nigerian singer Seun Kuti has ignited a heated discussion on social media with his recent statement, claiming that sex is a mutual act and not a favor.
The singer shared his thoughts on Instagram on September 19, 2024, where he stressed that only sex workers ‘give’ sex, while for everyone else, it’s a natural, mutual experience.
Kuti wrote:
“No one gives anyone sex except a prostitute. Sex is a mutual act. It’s not a favor, and you didn’t do anything special; you just had sex, a natural act that even cave men and women engaged in. Nigerian women, sex isn’t a favor unless you are a prostitute—and even that isn’t a bad thing.”
This bold statement quickly attracted hundreds of reactions from Instagram users, sparking a broader conversation on the dynamics of sexual relationships in Nigeria.
One commenter supported Kuti’s viewpoint but also called for respect in relationships:
“Absolutely! This is why some Nigerian men need to stop demanding sex or feeling entitled to it after minimal interactions. Respect women’s boundaries and wait until she’s ready instead of trying to pressure or manipulate her.”
However, not everyone agreed with Kuti. A commenter, coming from a religious perspective, criticized the statement, saying:
“Statement from the pit of hell! Sex is only for married people; anything outside that is a favor.”
Another user added to the conversation, saying:
“Can we normalize intimacy without commitment?”
Others focused on how some men treat women after being intimate, pointing out the double standards:
“You men say sex is mutual, but who’s the first to make women feel used after the act? Men who brag to their friends like they’ve ‘conquered’ something and talk down about the same women they slept with.”
Seun Kuti’s post continues to fuel discussions on sexual dynamics, consent, and respect in relationships across social media.
