The political scene in North-East Nigeria changed significantly on March 24, 2026, as Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri was officially welcomed into the All Progressives Congress.

At a well-attended event in Yola, Kashim Shettima received the governor on behalf of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, formally completing a move that had been hinted at since last month.

A Large-Scale Political Movement

Fintiri’s switch was not a solo decision. The event turned into a massive political shift, with a large number of his supporters and key allies moving with him into the APC.

Those who joined him include:

  • Members of his cabinet, including commissioners and special advisers
  • The Speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, Wesley Bathiya, along with 14 lawmakers who had earlier left the Peoples Democratic Party
  • All 21 local government chairmen in the state

“Partners on a Shared Mission”

While handing over the party flag, Vice President Shettima made it clear that Fintiri and his team are not being treated as outsiders but as key contributors to the party’s vision.

“You are not joining the APC as strangers, but as partners on a shared mission to build a Nigeria that works. We need your wisdom and the fresh ideas of those who have walked the long road of public service.” — Vice President Kashim Shettima.

Why the Move Matters

Fintiri, who was re-elected in 2023 under the PDP, explained that his decision was driven by a desire for unity and a stronger connection to the federal government. He stressed the importance of positioning Adamawa at the center of national decision-making.

Observers, however, believe there are strategic reasons behind the move:

  • Closer ties to the federal government could help attract more development projects and improve security in the state
  • His stance that the South should complete its eight-year turn signals support for President Tinubu’s possible 2027 bid, which had already created tension within the PDP

Implications for 2027

This development is a major blow to the PDP in Adamawa, a state long seen as its stronghold and also the home of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. With Fintiri now leading the APC in the state, the political balance in the North-East could shift significantly.

With this move happening just a day after talks between Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso in Kano, attention is already turning to 2027. Many are beginning to wonder if the country is heading toward a contest between a strengthened APC and a united opposition alliance.
