Why the Videos Were Removed on TikTok

TikTok, the popular app where people share short videos, owned by Bytedance, shared this news. They said the Nigerian videos were removed because they violated the rules set out in the Community Guidelines. Nigeria was among the top 50 countries where people broke these rules the most in the last quarter of 2023.

Global Video Removal on TikTok

Not just Nigeria, but globally, TikTok took down a massive 176.5 million videos during that period. Most of these videos came from the top 50 countries where rule-breaking was common. These videos went against many of TikTok’s rules, like being honest, real, safe, and respectful.

TikTok’s Efforts

TikTok has been working to keep its platform clean. Along with removing videos, they also got rid of 169 million accounts that were spam or fake. This shows their commitment to making TikTok a safe and trustworthy place for everyone.

“From October 7 through to the end of 2023, we removed more than 169 million fake accounts globally, and we have removed about 1.2 million bot comments on content tagged with hashtags related to the Israel-Hamas war.

“We remain vigilant in our efforts to detect external threats and safeguard the platform from fake accounts and engagement. These threats persistently probe and attack our systems, leading to occasional fluctuations in the reported metrics within these areas.”

TikTok deactivates fake engagements

During the last part of 2023, TikTok noticed a rise in fake engagement on its platform. They saw a big increase in the number of likes removed from videos, reaching a total of 1.03 billion. TikTok also cracked down on 720 million fake followers and rejected 4.9 billion fake follow requests. These actions were taken because TikTok found out that many of these engagements were not genuine but rather came from automated or fake sources.

Dealing with Fake Interactions

TikTok didn’t stop there. They also noticed more ads breaking the rules, leading to 1.5 million ads being taken down in Q4 2023, up from 1.3 million in the previous quarter. However, the number of ads removed because of account-level actions decreased during the same time.

Why it Matters

This crackdown on fake engagements and ads shows TikTok’s commitment to keeping its platform real and trustworthy. By removing fake likes, followers, and ads, TikTok aims to ensure that users have a genuine and enjoyable experience on the platform.
