Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed top security and intelligence chiefs to relocate to Maiduguri following deadly bomb attacks that killed 23 people and left more than 100 injured. The move comes as the Federal Government also dismissed a viral social media post falsely attributed to Donald Trump.
The Nigerian government described the widely circulated image as fake. The post, which spread rapidly online, claimed to show a tweet from Trump criticizing Tinubu’s handling of security challenges, particularly the ongoing insurgency in the North-East.
Reacting on Tuesday, the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, labeled the post as “Fake!!!” on his X account and shared the altered screenshot to debunk the claim.
The fabricated tweet alleged that Tinubu had failed in managing the security situation and referenced his recent trip to the United Kingdom amid the attacks in Maiduguri. However, no such statement appeared on any verified Trump platforms, including his official account.
The clarification comes as violence intensifies in Borno State. On Monday evening, multiple explosions struck Maiduguri in coordinated attacks linked to Boko Haram and ISWAP. The blasts targeted several locations, including areas near markets and public buildings, shortly after residents had broken their Ramadan fast.
Authorities confirmed that at least 23 people were killed, while more than 100 others sustained injuries. The attacks followed an earlier assault on a military base in the Ajilari area.
In a statement on Tuesday, Tinubu described the incidents as “profoundly upsetting” and called them desperate acts by terrorists under pressure from Nigerian forces.
He expressed condolences to the victims and solidarity with residents of Borno State, assuring Nigerians that the country would not give in to fear.
The President also confirmed that he has ordered security chiefs to move to Maiduguri to personally oversee and coordinate ongoing operations in response to the attacks.
