Nigerian musician Tiwa Savage has opened up about the intense criticism she faced early in her career for her daring fashion sense.
In a recent interview with Kiss FM in the United Kingdom, Savage shared her experiences of being harshly judged for her “risky” songs and bold wardrobe choices when she was just starting out.
She explained that her admiration for fellow Nigerian artist Ayra Starr is deeply rooted in these experiences. Savage noted how Starr continues to make waves in the global music scene despite facing similar critiques from Nigerians about her style.
Savage expressed her feelings, saying, “I love Ayra [Starr]. I’m obsessed with her. She’s amazing and genuine, too. It makes me emotional because when I started, I got criticized a lot for dressing too sexy and my lyrics being too risky.
“So, seeing someone like Ayra now… If I see her wearing the short skirts as they [critics] say, I’m like, ‘Make it shorter.’
“And she looks amazing. She’s extremely talented. Yeah, she’s a star.”
Savage’s support for Starr highlights the importance of self-expression and resilience in the face of criticism, emphasizing that true talent and authenticity will always shine through.
