Nigerian songwriter and musician, Tiwa Savage will be performing at the coronation ceremony of King Charles III on Sunday, May 7, 2023, at Westminster Abbey, London.
The last time a coronation was held was in 1953 which is about 72 years ago. Queen Elizabeth II being crowned as the new Monarch for that period. It is expected that the coronation of King Charles III will follow in the same tradition.
Tiwa Savage’s invitation to the coronation is a great feat for Nigerian musicians as she will be the first of her kind to do so. She is to join an array of celebrities like Steve Winwood, Lang Lang, Paloma Faith, and Olly Murs, to entertain guests at the coronation concert.
Savage mentioned, “It is truly an honour to represent Africa and the Commonwealth at such an historic event. I look forward to joining the celebrations and bringing Afrobeats to Windsor Castle.”
Tiwa, 43, is one of Nigeria’s top hitmakers and music ambassadors, known for her blend of Afrobeats, R&B, pop, and hip-hop.
Since becoming the first woman to win the MTV Europe Music Award for Best African Act in 2018, she has continued to break barriers in the male-dominated Nigerian music industry.
The live broadcast would be available on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, as well as BBC Radio 2 and BBC Sounds.
We are very excited to see Tiwa perform at the coronation ceremony.
