The Nigerian team made headlines at the 13th African Games in Ghana with their exceptional performances, deserving commendation and rewards.
Tobi Amusan, Nigeria’s athletic star, clinched victory for the third time in a row in the 100m hurdles with an impressive time of 12.89 seconds. This remarkable achievement made her the first woman in the history of the Games to secure three consecutive gold medals in the 100m hurdles event, upholding Nigeria’s unbeaten record since the Games began in 1965.
Ese Brume also stood out by becoming the first Nigerian woman since Modupe Oshikoya in 1973 and 1978 to defend a long jump title at the African Games. She recorded a leap of 6.92m (+3.9m/s).
In the men’s category, Chidi Okezie bagged Nigeria’s first gold medal in the 400m race in 37 years, setting a blistering personal best time of 45.06 seconds. Additionally, Nigeria secured gold in both the men’s and women’s 4x100m relays.
A particularly remarkable moment occurred when Omolara Ogunmakinju of Nigeria closed a 30m gap to overtake her Botswanan opponent in the 4x400m mixed relays, turning silver into gold for Nigeria.
