Nigerian social commentator, Vincent Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, has weighed in on Pastor Adeboye’s recent apology about tithing.
In a recent statement, Pastor Adeboye of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) addressed his previous claim that those who don’t pay tithes would not enter heaven. He admitted to being wrong and expressed his regret for the statement. After this apology video gained widespread attention, it drew the interest of VeryDarkMan and many others.
VeryDarkMan, known for his outspoken views on social issues, took the opportunity to challenge Pastor Adeboye and other religious leaders, questioning what else they might have influenced their followers to believe. He particularly mentioned Pastor David Ibiyeomie, who is also well-known for his strong stance on tithing. According to him, the apology is significant since Adeboye holds considerable influence within Nigerian Christianity.
VeryDarkMan stated:
“I’m really happy about what Papa Adeboye just revealed. Now, I’m waiting for all those pastors, like David Ibiyeomie, who constantly preach about tithing. The number one man of all the religious leaders in Nigeria has come out to apologize for saying that if you don’t pay tithes, you won’t make heaven. It’s not in the Bible. What else have they told us that isn’t in the Bible? That’s what I’m concerned about. How many things have they manipulated that are not in the Bible? I’m glad Papa Adeboye came out to say these things.”
VeryDarkMan went on to criticize pastors who refuse to acknowledge their errors, suggesting that many have distorted God’s word for their own benefit. He argued that religion has clouded judgment in Africa, asserting that many are too focused on religious teachings that may not be grounded in biblical truth.
“Imagine those pastors who won’t come out and apologize. They’ve manipulated people’s minds, twisting the words and message of the Bible to fit their narrative. I’m happy this came from the top leader. Religion has blinded us in Africa, and I’ll continue to talk about how it’s affected us. People’s eyes will be opened. Tomorrow, I’m waiting for the one who will tell us that all these prayers won’t move Nigeria forward.”
VeryDarkMan also expressed hope that Pastor Adeboye would use the tithes collected over time for the benefit of the Nigerian people. He further mentioned that Pastor Adeboye’s revised stance on tithing seems to validate the teachings of Pastor Abel Damina, who has long been critical of such practices.
In his words:
“I hope all the tithes collected during that period will now be used for something that benefits the people. I’m waiting for those pastors who used that same method to gather tithes and offerings—this means Abel Damina was right all along. I’m just waiting for the likes of David Ibiyeomie. Now, my question is, what other Bible verses or messages have they manipulated to suit their agenda? This shows that many of these pastors twist the Bible for their own narrative. I’m happy the top leader in Nigerian Christianity came out to apologize, and I respect him more for that. But everyone should open their eyes. Christianity is real, but many of the popular ones preaching are scammers.”
