Veteran Nigerian singer, songwriter, and actress Onyeka Onwenu has tragically passed away at the age of 72. The beloved artist reportedly collapsed shortly after performing at Stella Okoli’s birthday celebration on Tuesday, July 30, 2024.
According to The Niche newspaper, Onwenu was swiftly taken to Reddington Hospital in Lagos, where, despite the medical team’s best efforts, she was unable to be revived.
An eyewitness at the event confirmed the heart-wrenching news, stating, “It is deeply saddening. Onyeka Onwenu had just performed at Mrs. Stella Okoli’s birthday, and right after her performance, she collapsed. She was rushed to the hospital, but unfortunately, she didn’t survive.”
Another attendee shared their shock, saying, “I have never experienced anything like this. Onyeka had just left the stage, where she delivered a typically energetic and admirable performance. She then returned to her seat, where she suddenly collapsed. It’s hard to believe this is real.”
Onyeka Onwenu, born on January 31, 1952, in Imo State, Nigeria, was a multi-talented figure who first gained recognition as a singer. Her career took off with her unique voice and profound lyrics, often addressing social and political issues. This earned her the nickname “Elegant Stallion,” a testament to her grace and strength.
In addition to her illustrious music career, Onwenu was an accomplished actress, starring in numerous Nollywood films that showcased her remarkable range and depth. Her talents extended beyond entertainment; she was also a journalist and politician, notably serving as the chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture.
