Werder Bremen Handed Major Boost as Boniface Nears Return

In a surprising and encouraging development for Werder Bremen, Nigerian striker Victor Boniface has officially returned to the club after spending the past three months recovering from injury at his parent club, Bayer Leverkusen. His comeback comes much earlier than expected and could prove crucial in the final stretch of the season.

From Season-Ending Injury to Early Return

Back in January, Boniface underwent knee surgery in Innsbruck, and early reports suggested he would miss the rest of the 2025/26 campaign. Both Bremen’s medical team and sporting director Peter Niemeyer had ruled him out for the season.

However, the 25-year-old forward has made an impressive recovery:

  • Rehabilitation process: After surgery with specialist Dr. Christian Fink, Boniface dedicated the last 10 weeks to an intense rehab program, sharing parts of his journey online.
  • Final clearance: He recently completed high-intensity training sessions with Bayer Leverkusen’s U-19 team, which helped him secure medical clearance.
  • Return to Bremen: Boniface arrived back at the Weserstadion today to begin the final stage of his recovery.

Careful Reintegration Plan

Despite the excitement surrounding his return, the club is taking a cautious approach. Peter Niemeyer confirmed that Boniface will ease back gradually rather than immediately joining full team training.

“Victor has put in a lot of work to get here. He’ll start with individual sessions, and we’ll monitor his progress closely. If all goes well, he could rejoin team training by mid-April,” Niemeyer said.

A Chance to Turn Things Around

Before his injury in December, Boniface had struggled to make an impact during his loan spell at Bremen. In 11 appearances, he failed to score and managed just two assists, leading some to question the move.

Now, his return offers a fresh opportunity. As Bremen push through the final weeks of the Bundesliga season, Boniface could provide the attacking boost they need.

Positive Signs for Nigeria

His recovery is also good news for the Super Eagles. After missing much of 2025 due to injury, Boniface could be back in form just in time for Nigeria’s upcoming international fixtures this summer.

Fan Optimism Grows

Boniface was spotted at the club’s training ground earlier today, looking fit and in good spirits. While a return in the April 25 match against Eintracht Frankfurt is being speculated, fans are simply relieved to see him back and nearing full fitness.
