Winning a talent hunt might feel like the finish line, but for those behind the decks, it is really just the start of the journey.
After five intense weeks of competition, DJ Mafdee emerged as the winner of the American Cola Club Talent Search. But what happens when the spotlight fades and the trophy is finally on the shelf? We caught up with the energetic DJ to talk about his journey, the hustle behind the win, and what comes next.
Looking back at the competition, what moment stands out the most?
The voting process was one of the toughest parts for me. When I realised it was one vote per day, I had to go out on the streets and ask random people to support me. Some people turned me down, others agreed to help. It was stressful, but in the end, it was worth the experience.
Did winning feel like an instant turning point?
Not immediately. It took some time for it to really sink in, but when it did, it felt amazing.
What has changed the most in your life since the win?
I have gained more visibility and built new connections.

Have new opportunities started coming in?
Not yet, but I am still hopeful. One thing I truly appreciated about the experience was working with the brand. There was real communication and openness. I was able to share my ideas and even reach out directly whenever I had something creative in mind. It never felt one-sided.
What separates a good DJ from a great one?
Experience plays a big role. You also need to invest in your skills, upgrade your equipment, and stay consistent. Things like music selection, reading the crowd, creativity, and smooth transitions are what make the difference.

What kind of energy do you bring when you are performing?
When I am behind the decks, I try to create a vibe that helps people forget their worries and just enjoy the moment. I love building an atmosphere where everyone feels connected through the music.
Who influenced your sound early on?
DJ Consequence and DJ Kaywise had a strong influence on me.
How would you describe your sound today?
My sound is a mix of Afro vibes, high energy, and smooth transitions. I enjoy blending Afrobeats and Amapiano to keep things fresh and exciting.
What are you working on next?
I have a few projects in mind. I am looking to introduce American Cola products to Jos, Plateau State, possibly through a distribution outlet. I also plan to organise a brand activation event there and connect with the local community.
Beyond that, I want to keep pushing my brand to a wider audience, build strong networks, and position myself to work with bigger brands.
What do you want people to feel when they hear your music?
I want people to feel alive and connected. My goal is to create music that makes people forget their worries, move freely, and enjoy the moment. I also hope it helps me build more relationships and gain more recognition.
What did the competition teach you about yourself?
It taught me to believe in myself more. It showed me that there are many opportunities out there, and that consistency is key if I want to grow as a creative.
