‘Where Are His Gratuities?’ — Wale Adenuga Fires Back at ‘Papa Ajasco’ Actor Over Civil Service Claims

Wale Adenuga has responded to recent claims by veteran actor Abiodun Ayoyinka about financial hardship, questioning the narrative and denying any form of exploitation by his production company.

Ayoyinka, widely known for playing the iconic Papa Ajasco character in the popular sitcom Papa Ajasco, recently opened up in an interview with podcaster Lucky Udu about his financial struggles. He revealed that he earns about ₦45,000 per episode and typically features in around 13 episodes each year. Since retiring from his role at the Lagos State Council for Arts and Culture five years ago, he said life has been challenging, adding that he does not own a car or a house.

The interview quickly went viral, sparking concern among Nigerians who grew up watching the show.

In response, Adenuga, Chairman and Executive Producer of Wale Adenuga Productions, issued a statement addressing what he described as misinformation and emotional reactions surrounding the issue.

While praising Ayoyinka’s talent and acknowledging his long-standing role in bringing the Papa Ajasco character to life, Adenuga maintained that their relationship remains cordial and free of any major conflict.

However, he strongly challenged the claim that the actor is broke. He pointed out that Ayoyinka spent over 30 years in the Lagos State civil service, where he reportedly held prominent roles, including serving as a key figure in the state’s cultural troupe. Adenuga questioned what became of the actor’s gratuities and retirement benefits after such a lengthy career.

He also addressed claims about Ayoyinka not owning a car, stating that the company had provided him with vehicles in the past, similar to other cast members. According to him, the actor has used several cars over the years, including a Mercedes-Benz, and is also believed to own a house in Ogun State.

On the issue of restrictions surrounding the Papa Ajasco brand, Adenuga explained that they are standard measures to protect intellectual property. He clarified that while Ayoyinka is free to take on jobs using his personal name, he would need approval to use the Papa Ajasco character commercially. He noted that other actors from the show, including Pa James, Mama Ajasco, Boy Alinco, Miss Pepeiye, Akpan, and Oduma, regularly work outside the brand without restrictions.

Adenuga also provided insight into the production schedule, explaining that filming typically takes place over about six weeks each year, during which enough episodes are produced for a full season. He added that this structure allows cast members ample time to pursue other sources of income.

He concluded by firmly rejecting any claims of neglect or unfair treatment, insisting that his company meets its financial obligations and pays actors in line with industry standards.

The situation has sparked wider discussions about how veteran actors are compensated in Nigeria’s entertainment industry, as well as the challenges many face after retirement.
