The Inspector General of Police, IGP Olukayode Egbetokun has withdrawn the police officers who were assigned to Yahaya Bello. All police assigned to the former Kogi State Governor have been recalled.
Former Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State faces a new setback as the Inspector General of Police withdraws police officers assigned to him for protection. This move comes amidst Bello’s ongoing clash with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Police Orderlies Withdrawn
Yahaya Bello, the embattled former Governor of Kogi State, has been stripped of his police orderlies who provided him with security. The withdrawal of these officers, ordered by Inspector General of Police Olukayode Egbetokun, was communicated through an official wireless message.
The directive stated, “IG has ordered the withdrawal of all policemen attached to His Excellency and former Executive Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya Bello. Acknowledge compliance and treat with utmost importance. Please, above, for your information and strict compliance.”
EFCC’s Decleared Yahaya Bello Wanted
Yahaya Bello’s troubles deepen as the Nigerian Immigration Service joins the fray. The EFCC had previously declared him wanted for alleged financial crimes amounting to ₦80.2 billion. This declaration prompted the Nigerian Immigration Service to place him on its watchlist.
The EFCC’s statement on Facebook declared, “Former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, is wanted by the EFCC for offences relating to economic and financial crimes to the tune of N80.2 Billion.” The public was urged to report any information on his whereabouts to the Commission or the nearest police station.
Immigration Watchlist
In a circular dated Thursday, April 18, 2024, the Nigerian Immigration Service officially placed Yahaya Bello on its watchlist. The circular, signed by the Assistant Comptroller of Immigration DS Umar, detailed Bello’s name, nationality, and passport number (B50083321).
The circular stated, “I am directed to inform you that the above-named person has been placed on the watch list. Suffice to mention that the subject is being prosecuted before the Federal High Court Abuja for conspiracy, breach of trust, and money laundering.”
Yahaya Bello Evading Arrest
Despite the EFCC’s preparation to arraign him before a Federal High Court in Abuja, Yahaya Bello managed to evade arrest on Thursday. The authorities are actively seeking his apprehension in connection with the charges against him.
