Nollywood actress Yvonne Jegede recently issued an apology to May Yul-Edochie after facing criticism for her remarks on polygamy involving actor Yul Edochie. Her comments were made during a podcast discussion and sparked a backlash.
In a statement posted on her Instagram on June 12, 2024, Jegede addressed the controversy and clarified her intentions regarding the discussion that took place on The Honest Bunch Podcast.
“I want to address the concerns and backlash arising from my recent interview on The Honest Bunch Podcast where I discussed themes related to my latest film on Amazon Prime, A Father’s Love,” Jegede began.
She expressed regret that her words had been misinterpreted as disrespectful towards May Yul-Edochie, emphasizing that causing pain was never her intent. Jegede sincerely apologized for any offense her comments may have caused.
“After reflecting on the interview, I understand that my words did not convey my true intentions and were perceived as insensitive, especially towards Mrs. May Edochie, who has faced challenges due to her marital situation. I deeply regret if my comments added to her distress. It was never my intention to cause pain or disrespect, and for that, I am truly sorry,” Jegede wrote.
Jegede further explained that her discussion on polygamy was meant to highlight its cultural context and underscore the importance of its practice in society.
“I want to clarify that my comments on polygamy were intended to discuss its cultural significance and emphasize the importance of its respectful practice. My goal was to highlight that polygamy is part of our culture, but how it is approached matters significantly. Unfortunately, my message may have been lost in how I articulated it,” she added.
During the podcast, Jegede had mentioned her perspective on Yul Edochie’s situation, noting that her views stemmed from her understanding of polygamy within many Nigerian families.
“You see, with Yul Edochie, many of those criticizing him online come from backgrounds where polygamy is common – second, third, or even fourth wives. Some even come from situations not widely known within their families. Let’s not be quick to judge online,” she had stated.
