Minister Under Scrutiny

Minister Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye has been embroiled in controversy over the past 48 hours. She faced the House of Representatives Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development regarding allegations of diverting ₦1.5 billion designated for paying contractors in her ministry. This investigation was prompted by a petition from contractors claiming they had not been compensated for completed work.

During the heated exchange with the committee, the minister made a notable error in her spoken English. Defending herself, she said, “I have never tampered with anything. That’s why I no fear anybody. I’m not fearing.”

Phrank Shaibu’s Response

Phrank Shaibu, reacting to this grammatical error, highlighted the mistake on his official X handle. He wrote, “@BarrUjuKennedy, ‘I am not fearing’ smacks of wretched illiteracy, as the word ‘fear’ is a stative verb that refuses to play in the progressive sandbox.”

Shaibu elaborated, “In the English language, certain verbs that describe states, emotions, senses, possession, and thoughts are too dignified for continuous form frolics. ‘Fear’ is one of these regal verbs. The correct expression should be ‘I am not afraid’ or ‘I do not fear.’ Grammar rules the kingdom!”
