The Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has directed the immediate arrest of the deposed Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero. This directive was issued in a statement on Saturday by the Director General of Media and Publicity for the Kano Government House, Sanusi Tofa.
According to the statement, Governor Yusuf accused Bayero of creating unrest in the state. The statement, titled “Gov. Yusuf Orders Arrest of Deposed Emir of Kano Aminu Ado Bayero,” revealed the governor’s decision and the reasons behind it.
The statement read, “The Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has ordered the immediate arrest of the former Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, for creating tension in the state. The former Emir was smuggled into Kano city last night in an attempt to forcefully return to the palace two days after being deposed by the governor.”
In the early hours of Saturday, May 25, 2024, the new Emir, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, arrived at the palace with Governor Yusuf, the deputy governor, the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, and other high-ranking officials. They reached the palace around 1 am.
As the state’s Chief Security Officer, Governor Yusuf has instructed the Commissioner of Police to arrest the deposed Emir immediately for disrupting public peace and attempting to undermine the state’s stability. The statement emphasized, “His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has directed the Commissioner of Police to arrest the deposed Emir with immediate effect for disturbing public peace and attempting to destroy the relative peace the state enjoys.”
Aminu Ado Bayero, whose location had been unknown since his deposition on Thursday, returned to Kano on Saturday. This return coincided with the state House of Assembly’s repeal of a law signed by ex-Governor Abdullahi Ganduje on December 5, 2019, which had split the emirate into five and appointed separate Emirs for each division.
Following the repeal of the Kano Emirates Council Law, Governor Yusuf gave all Emirs affected by the previous law 48 hours to vacate their palaces and hand them over to the Commissioner of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs. He also reinstated Muhammadu Sanusi, whom Ganduje had deposed in 2020, as the Emir of Kano.
On Friday, the governor officially reappointed Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 16th Emir of Kano. Sanusi received his letter of reinstatement at the Government House in Kano. Presenting the letter, Governor Yusuf stated, “By the powers conferred on me by the Kano Emirate Council Law of 1984 and 2024, and supported by the recommendation of the kingmakers, I have the singular pleasure of confirming the reappointment of Muhammadu Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano and the head of the Kano Emirate Council.”
A video obtained by Daily Trust showed Ado Bayero arriving in Kano to a warm reception from his supporters on Saturday morning, just hours before the governor’s arrest order was issued.
