Lagos court convicts cosmetic surgeon, Adepoju over client’s death

The Federal High Court in Lagos State has convicted Dr. Anuoluwapo Adepoju, a cosmetic surgeon and founder of MedContour Services Ltd., for her involvement in the death of Nneka Onwuzuligbo following a botched plastic surgery in 2020. This development was reported by the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ).

The news was confirmed by Babatunde Irukera, the former Director-General of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC). On Friday, Irukera shared the outcome on Twitter, stating:

“Today is a day of pride for me that I personally prosecuted Anu Adepoju and her medical practice. Though I’ve left, the case has ended in a conviction, strengthening the accountability framework for all in society, professionals or otherwise. This is how society should work and grow.

“Dr. Anu Adepoju and her medical practice were convicted on all five counts charged by the FCCPC. The wheel of justice may grind slowly, but we must see it through. What we need are enforced with audacity and the will to prosecute competently and diligently. Good day for consumers of professional services.”

In 2020, PUNCH Online reported that the FCCPC had arraigned Adepoju on five charges before Justice Mohammed Liman. The charges included accusations that the cosmetic surgeon ignored multiple summonses from the agency and failed to produce requested documents.

The conviction of Dr. Adepoju marks a significant step in enforcing professional accountability and consumer protection in Nigeria. More details about the case and its implications will follow as they become available.
