“Nigeria Doesn’t Deserve Royal Visit,” UK Journalists Criticize Harry & Meghan for Visiting Nigeria

A British journalist and presenter, Kevin O’Sullivan, has expressed strong disapproval of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, for their recent visit to Nigeria.

"Nigeria Doesn't Deserve Royal Visit," UK Journalists Criticize Harry & Meghan for Visiting Nigeria

This criticism follows a controversial remark by another British journalist, Christopher Wilson, who faced backlash for comparing Nigerians to Nazis in the context of the royal couple’s visit.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle visited Nigeria to support the Invictus Games, a tournament founded by Harry for wounded soldiers.

Despite their noble intentions, the visit has drawn significant criticism from British journalists and royal enthusiasts. O’Sullivan, a TalkTV presenter, argued that Nigeria does not merit any endorsement, particularly from members of the British royal family.

O’Sullivan remarked,

“The royal family doesn’t just go anywhere. These tours are planned years in advance, and the countries the royals visit are chosen very carefully. There’s no way our royal family would set foot in Nigeria, a country where female genital mutilation is rife, women’s rights are practically nonexistent, and where extremist Islamic groups regularly kidnap hundreds of children. This is not a country that should be endorsed by anyone, certainly not our royal family. Harry and Meghan are naive in their actions, making this country look good when it doesn’t deserve it.”

Interestingly, King Charles III has visited Nigeria four times: in 1990, 1999, 2006, and 2018.

O’Sullivan’s guest, royal correspondent and expert Michael Cole, also voiced his concerns, labeling Nigeria as a dangerous destination. Cole stated, “I couldn’t tell you the number of royal tours I’ve been on, but what you say is absolutely right. Nigeria is considered dangerous by both the Foreign Office and the American State Department. It competes with Johannesburg, South Africa, as the murder capital of the continent. The country is plagued by industrial-scale internet fraud, identity theft, and other forms of criminal activity, none of which are prosecuted.”

Cole, a former BBC journalist, expressed confusion over Prince Harry’s decision to visit Nigeria, suggesting that it defies common sense and reason.
