UK Regulator Reports Air Peace for Alleged Safety Violations

The United Kingdom Civil Aviation Authority (UK CAA) has raised concerns with Nigeria’s Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) regarding alleged safety violations by Air Peace. This development follows just three months after Air Peace started operating its Lagos-London route.

UK Regulator Reports Air Peace for Alleged Safety Violations

The UK CAA has reportedly sent two mandatory occurrence reports concerning Air Peace. These reports have been forwarded to the NCAA for further investigation.

The complaint from the UK CAA, titled “United Kingdom SAFA Ramp Inspection Report” (reference number: CAA-UK-2024-0217) and “NATS Management System Safety Report,” highlights several safety issues. In response, the NCAA has requested clarification from Air Peace.

The NCAA’s letter to Air Peace, with reference number NCAA/DOLTS/APL/Vol.11/03624 and titled “United Kingdom SAFA Ramp Inspection Report,” was dated May 14, 2024. It was signed by NCAA General Manager of Operations, Capt. O.O. Lawani.

In this letter, the NCAA pointed out that the UK CAA had raised concerns about the lack of operational approval for the Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) functions, which are critical for the safe operation of the aircraft. The NCAA noted that the flight’s captain admitted using an EFB for navigational purposes without proper approval.

The letter also mentioned that there was no mounting device for the EFB, nor were there charging points or backup batteries, further compromising safety.

Air Peace began its operations to London Gatwick from Lagos’s Murtala Muhammed International Airport under the Bilateral Air Services Agreement between Nigeria and the UK.

Attempts to reach Air Peace’s spokesperson, Stanley Olisa, were unsuccessful. During a phone call, Olisa did not respond to inquiries and remained silent until the call ended. Additionally, a text message sent to him went unanswered at the time of this report.
