The Lagos State University administration has spoken out over the widely circulated certificate that was discovered in a “suya” location within the state.
The institution declared in a statement on Tuesday that the certificate’s validity has been revoked due to the bearer’s name being spelled incorrectly.
The management also confirmed that although the aforementioned certificate was issued, it was revoked on February 25, 2013, due to an error in the graduate’s surname—which should have read ABIOYE instead of ABISOYE.
“The University, having recovered the certificate on November 21, 2018, wishes to make the following clarifications: The certificate in question exists but was invalidated on February 25, 2013, because the graduate’s surname was incorrectly written as ABISOYE instead of ABIOYE,”
the statement read.
On September 30, 2014, a replacement certificate bearing the graduate’s right surname was issued and picked up by LASU, according to confirmation.
The university insisted that the invalidated certificate ought to have been destroyed right away upon re-issuing in accordance with its policies. But it ended up in the public area because of an oversight.
The statement added, “Office waste papers were not properly screened before being disposed of, which is how the invalidated certificate ended up in the public area.”
Recall that on Wednesday, the certificate of an engineering graduate from the university went viral online when a guy asked to get in touch with the holder because he felt the certificate had been used to sell him suya.
The certificate in question is the property of Abisoye Azeez Oluwaseun, a LASU Chemical and Polymer Engineering graduate with Second Class Honours (Upper Division).
