This is a historical drama that was based on Queen Amina of Zazzau which was premiered on the streamer on November 4. Izu Ojukwu’s newly released film, ‘Amina‘ has broken a new Netflix record.
The movie was premiered exclusively on the streaming channel recently and became the first Nigerian film to make the global top ten list.
This was confirmed by the feat, director Izu Ojukwu shared a video of Netflix Director of Content for Africa, Ben Amadasun making the announcement at a press briefing.
“Netflix confirms that ‘Amina’ has become the first Nigerian film to hit the Top Ten list globally on its platform,” Ojukwu wrote on Instagram.
“This stunning record-setting accomplishment was made possible by the sacrifices of both cast and crew, whom one can never thank enough”.
The movie has Lucy Ameh in the lead role as Amina and it explores the rise to power of the 16th-century warrior and queen.
The film is co-produced by ‘Living In Bondage’ producer, Okey Ogunjiofor also stars Clarion Chukwurah and Ali Nuhu.

The film Amina was produced in collaborations that spanned three continents of Africa, Europe and America. The director employed a linear narrative during the movie-making. This means that the events are largely portrayed in chronological order, which was telling the events in the order in which they occurred. Hence, you will see a plot that pretty much begins from the 16th-century when the young Queen ruled the Zazzau empire.
The storyline was spot on and simplified with the use of English, Hausa and Igala languages. The movie is action-packed and concisely depicts the incredible life and times and of course, the beauty of Amina, a young and fearless warrior princess.
Although she was born in a highly chauvinistic society, she conquered the Zazzau empire and became the first and outstanding female Sarki in Nigerian history.
The film went through a lot of processes during the pre-production training where casts were first camped for three months and trained on how to ride horses, and use swords to fight on horsebacks, before commencing shoot properly.
Besides, the filmmaker ensured that every character gained mastery of different skills like horse riding and the use of swords and shields.
The producer of the film, Ogunjiofor deserves some accolades in the manner employed in managing over 1000 cast and crew members and overseeing the entire production process, which took 25 years to complete.
Among things delivered right in the film is the production design, especially in scenes set in the bygone era, with tastefully-done recreations of the 16th century.
