Inside the “Fake Guard” Syndicate: How Lagos Police Brought Down a Car Vandalism Ring
In a major win for security in residential estates, the Lagos State Police Command has uncovered and dismantled a well-organized criminal group that had been targeting high-end neighborhoods, especially around the Lekki axis.
On Wednesday, March 25, 2026, the police presented three main suspects—Obinna Okeke, Emmanuel Anyanwu, and Joshua Nkemdirim—who were arrested during an early morning sting operation inside a gated estate in Lekki.
How the Syndicate Operated
The group relied on deception and intimidation to carry out their operations.
- They used a modified Mercedes-Benz car jack designed to look like a rifle.
- When struck with a spanner, the device produced a sharp metallic sound that mimicked a gun being cocked, creating fear among security guards.
- Members wore fake uniforms with “Special Force” labels, allowing them to pass through estate gates by posing as security operatives on official duty.

Targeting Luxury Vehicles
Once inside, usually between 2:00 AM and 4:00 AM, the suspects focused on high-end vehicles and worked quickly.
- They removed valuable parts such as ECUs, side mirrors, windows, wiring, and control systems.
- Their preferred targets included brands like Toyota, Lexus, and Mercedes-Benz SUVs.
- The stolen items were then sold through a network of buyers in spare parts markets across Lagos.

A Long Investigation Pays Off
According to Moshood Jimoh, the arrests followed months of investigation after residents raised concerns about repeated incidents in 2025.
Earlier, eight members of the same network had already been charged to court. This latest operation is believed to have effectively shut down the remaining active group operating in the Lekki and Ajah areas.

“When they hit a spanner on that jack, it sounds as though someone is cocking a gun. Most security guards, thinking they are outgunned, simply retreat while the vandals strip the cars.” — Lagos Police Briefing.
Safety Advice for Residents
The police have also shared tips to help prevent similar incidents:
- Do not rely on uniforms alone. Always verify the identity of anyone claiming to be a security operative.
- Encourage security guards to carry out random patrols instead of predictable routines.
- Install modern security systems such as motion sensors and CCTV cameras with night vision.
The case serves as a reminder that criminals are becoming more creative, but with vigilance and proper security measures, communities can stay one step ahead.
