Nigeria’s political scene took a clear turn this weekend as the All Progressives Congress wrapped up its 8th National Convention at Eagle Square. With more than 8,400 delegates present, the gathering served as both a show of strength and a planning ground ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The event also gave Bola Ahmed Tinubu the opportunity to outline key priorities, especially in the power sector.

New Leadership Takes Shape

One of the major outcomes of the convention was the confirmation of the party’s leadership.

  • Nentawe Yilwatda was officially confirmed as National Chairman. He is widely seen as a reform-minded figure expected to modernize the party’s internal systems.
  • Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru retained his role as National Secretary, signaling stability within the party’s leadership structure.

To avoid internal disputes, the APC adopted a consensus approach for many positions, a move President Tinubu described as a sign of discipline and unity.

Focus on Power Supply

Beyond politics, the President used his speech to address Nigeria’s ongoing electricity challenges.

He announced that the newly created Grid Asset Management Company will add 1,500 megawatts to the national grid through a new transmission corridor.

The goal is to fix a long-standing issue where electricity is generated but cannot be efficiently distributed due to weak infrastructure. The initial focus will be the Benin to Lagos corridor, a key industrial route expected to benefit both businesses and households.

A Message of Progress

Tinubu acknowledged the frustrations many Nigerians face with power supply but assured party members that improvements are underway. He described the current phase as a transition from tough economic reforms to a period of steady growth.

By combining internal unity with promises of real infrastructure improvements, especially in electricity, the party is positioning itself to campaign on performance and delivery.

As delegates leave Abuja, one thing is clear: preparations for 2027 are already in full swing, with the APC focusing on unity and tangible results as its main message.
