Nigeria’s political landscape saw a major development on Monday as the “mainstream” faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), strongly backed by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, successfully held its 10th Elective National Convention in Abuja.
In a move that has reshaped the opposition party, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officially recognized the outcome of the convention, effectively sidelining the rival faction led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki.
A New Leadership Emerges
The convention, chaired by former Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, produced a 21-member National Working Committee (NWC) tasked with leading the party into the 2027 general elections.
Delegates largely opted for continuity, re-electing key figures aligned with the Wike camp many of whom have been central to the party’s recent legal and political struggles.

INEC Recognition Shifts the Balance

The most decisive moment of the day was INEC’s involvement and subsequent recognition of the Abuja convention.
For months, the PDP has been divided, with the Turaki-led faction insisting on its own legitimacy following an earlier convention in Ibadan. However, recent Federal High Court rulings that invalidated rival party structures appear to have influenced INEC’s stance.
By monitoring and recognizing the Abuja process, the electoral body has effectively endorsed the Wike-backed leadership as the official PDP structure ahead of the 2027 elections.
Why It Matters
- 2027 Elections: Nyesom Wike has further cemented his influence within the party, with supporters openly referring to him as the PDP’s “National Leader.”
- Legal Implications: Although the Turaki faction plans to challenge the decision at the Supreme Court, INEC’s recognition limits their ability to operate as a legitimate party structure.
- Party Unity: While critics describe the development as a “hostile takeover,” supporters argue it was necessary to restore order and discipline within the party.
What Lies Ahead
With a new NWC in place, the PDP now faces the challenge of rebuilding unity within its ranks. However, reconciliation efforts may prove difficult, as divisions between the Wike camp and figures like Atiku Abubakar and Kabiru Turaki appear deeply entrenched.
Newly elected National Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed has called for unity among “true members” of the party, but ongoing legal battles and internal tensions suggest the road ahead will not be smooth.
