A joyful celebration turned into a nightmare late Sunday night in Northern Nigeria, casting a dark shadow over an already troubled region.

In Kahir village, located in Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State, gunmen attacked a wedding ceremony, leaving grief, fear, and devastation in their wake.

Here’s a clear account of what happened and the current security concerns in the area.

The Attack: From Celebration to Chaos

The incident occurred around 11:47 p.m. on Sunday, March 29, 2026. What began as a happy gathering quickly spiraled into panic when armed bandits stormed the venue.

  • How it unfolded: Witnesses said the attackers arrived in large numbers, carrying advanced weapons, and began shooting indiscriminately at guests.
  • Casualties: At least 13 people lost their lives, while several others were injured. Those critically wounded have been transferred from Kagarko General Hospital to better-equipped facilities in Kaduna.
  • Kidnappings: In addition to the killings, many guests were taken away. Although the exact number is still unclear, early reports suggest that more than 28 people including women and children were abducted into nearby forests.

Looting and Lack of Immediate Response

The violence didn’t stop with the shooting. According to residents and community leaders, including Musa Adamu, the attackers operated for nearly an hour without any security intervention.

During that time, they:

  • Looted nearby shops, taking food and essential supplies
  • Broke into a local chemist and made away with drugs and medical items
  • Forced residents to flee into surrounding bushes for safety

Many villagers only returned at dawn to scenes of destruction, loss, and missing loved ones.

Official Reaction

The Kaduna State Police Command has confirmed the attack. Spokesperson DSP Hassan Mansur stated that investigations are underway and efforts have begun to track down those responsible.

“We are aware of the incident, and investigations are ongoing to determine the exact number of kidnapped individuals and bring the perpetrators to justice,” the police said.

A Larger Security Concern

This attack once again underscores the ongoing security challenges in Nigeria’s North-West region. On the same day, March 30, the Northern States Governors’ Forum met in Abuja and acknowledged that while some progress has been made, much more needs to be done.

They stressed the urgency of strengthening security measures, including calls for state policing and continued investment in regional security initiatives like the Security Trust Fund.
