Abia Governor Otti Responds to 2027 Speculation, Focuses on Governance

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has sparked fresh political conversation with his recent comments on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s possible re-election bid in 2027. Speaking during his monthly media chat in Umuahia, Otti made it clear that his position is rooted in pragmatism, a stance many are now describing as a strategic balance between the Labour Party and the ruling APC.

I Am Not in a Position to Oppose

When asked about growing political activities ahead of 2027, Governor Otti stated that he neither has the authority nor the intention to oppose the President’s right to run again.

It is not within my power or position to oppose the President’s right to seek re-election. Every Nigerian, including the President, has a constitutional right to contest if they so choose. My focus remains on the governance of Abia State and delivering the dividends of democracy to my people,” he said.

Why His Statement Is Significant

Otti’s remarks reflect his consistent message that governance should come before politics. By avoiding early political confrontation, he is keeping attention on his development plans for Abia rather than engaging in party rivalry.

He also pointed to ongoing cooperation with the Federal Government, including projects like the Abia International Airport and upgrades to the National War Museum.

His position is particularly notable given recent developments within the Labour Party, especially Peter Obi’s move to the ADC. Otti’s approach suggests he is shaping a political path that prioritizes collaboration with the federal government over strict party opposition.

Key Announcements from the Media Chat

Beyond politics, the governor used the session to highlight major developments in the state:

  • Conversion of Government House to Hotel
The uncompleted New Government House at Ogurube Layout, which Otti previously described as unsuitable for use, will be transformed into a five-star hotel. Talks with an international luxury brand are said to be at an advanced stage.
  • Preparation for State Policing
With the federal approval for state policing, Otti confirmed that Abia is ready to take the lead. Work is already ongoing to establish the framework for a state police system once all legal processes are completed.
  • Move Toward Energy Independence
The governor revealed plans to disconnect all 17 local government areas from the national grid. With the Geometric Power plant expanding to 266 megawatts, more parts of the state, including Umuahia, are expected to enjoy stable electricity similar to Aba.

A Strategic Approach to Leadership

While some critics see Otti’s comments as a soft stance toward the APC, supporters argue that it reflects practical leadership. Maintaining a good relationship with the federal government could help attract more infrastructure projects to the state, including the recently announced runway partnership for the Nsulu Airport.

As the 2027 elections draw closer, Otti’s focus on governance over political confrontation may position him either as a unifying figure or draw criticism from those who prefer a more aggressive opposition stance.
