Despite being ineligible for full pension, the Nigerian Army has granted Private Ruth Ogunleye a 50% monthly pension for life along with other benefits.
Private Ruth Ogunleye, who had publicly accused senior officers of sexual harassment, has been discharged by the Nigerian Army. In January 2024, she used her TikTok account to claim that Colonel I.B Abdulkareem, along with Colonel G.S Ogor and Brigadier General I.B Solebo, mistreated her.
Ogunleye alleged that Abdulkareem attempted sexual assault, forcibly injected her, evicted her from her residence, and detained her in a psychiatric hospital when she rejected his advances.
These accusations led to an investigation ordered by the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja.
During a press briefing in Abuja, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations, announced the findings of the investigation.
“Upon receiving her complaint, the Nigerian Army tasked the Military Police with a thorough investigation. The investigation found that Colonel I.B Abdulkareem did not commit the alleged offences,” Nwachukwu said.
He also stressed that the investigation followed due process to ensure fairness.
The Army’s inquiry also raised concerns regarding Ogunleye’s mental health.
“Medical evaluations conducted at the National Hospital in Abuja confirmed that Ogunleye was suffering from a condition that made her medically vulnerable,” Nwachukwu added.
Although she had been recommended for discharge in 2022 on medical grounds, the Army continued to provide her with care before finally discharging her.
Concerns over Ogunleye’s online and offline behavior led the Army to forego disciplinary action, opting to discharge her on medical grounds instead.
Despite her ineligibility for full pension benefits, the Army awarded her a 50% monthly pension for life and other associated benefits.
