In Ibadan, Oyo state, Nigerians are expressing their frustration on social media over the news of a significant rise in fees for new students at the University of Ibadan (UI). According to a report by The Cable on April 11, 2024, several students have confirmed the increase, which could be as high as 480%, as posted on the university’s online platforms.
A student, speaking to Legit.ng, provided screenshots showing the new fee structures displayed on the portals. One screenshot indicates a base fee of N372,000, with an additional N40,000 designated for utility and technology fees, totaling N412,000. Another screenshot displays a total university fee of N203,500 for fresh students, covering both utility and technology charges. The Guardian newspaper also covered this development.
The news of the fee hike has sparked outcry on social media platforms, with many users expressing their dissatisfaction.
