Admiral Alison Madueke, a former Chief of Naval Staff, has filed a petition in the Lagos State High Court seeking to legally end his marriage to Diezani and requesting that she cease using his surname.
In his petition for jactitation of marriage, Madueke argues that Diezani’s continued use of his name, despite their marriage being legally dissolved, is damaging his reputation and could lead to unintended consequences, especially given her corruption allegations.
Madueke, who also served as a military governor of Anambra and Imo states, married Diezani on June 30, 1999, under the Marriage Act.
Although Diezani filed for divorce in November 2021, which was finalized by a court judgment in April 2022, Madueke claims she has not stopped using his surname. He states that despite serving her a formal notice in December 2023 to cease using his name and revert to her maiden name, Agama, Diezani has continued to do so without justification.
Madueke emphasized, “Even though the marriage has been legally dissolved, the respondent continues to use my first name (Alison) and surname (Madueke) as her own, causing me embarrassment.”
He further stated that Diezani’s actions mislead the public into believing there is still a relationship between them, potentially harming his reputation and integrity.
Madueke’s petition highlights that Diezani’s use of his name poses legal and financial risks to him, and he seeks the court’s intervention to prevent her from further using his names.
In conclusion, Madueke requests an order of perpetual injunction restraining Diezani from using his first name and surname following the dissolution of their marriage.
