As Muslims in Nigeria and across the world observe the sacred celebration of Eid-el-Kabir, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has delivered a national message centered on peace, resilience, and collective responsibility. In his 2026 Sallah address, the President acknowledged the difficulties currently facing the nation while urging citizens to remain hopeful and united in the face of ongoing challenges.

The message, which comes at a time of economic adjustment and security concerns in several parts of the country, was framed around themes of sacrifice, patience, and national rebuilding. President Tinubu used the occasion to reassure Nigerians that his administration remains fully committed to addressing insecurity, strengthening the economy, and fostering unity across ethnic and religious lines.

Security: Assurance to Citizens in Troubled Areas

A major portion of the President’s address focused on the security situation in parts of the country where communities continue to experience threats from terrorism, banditry, and other forms of violent crime. While acknowledging that these issues persist, President Tinubu emphasized that government forces are actively engaged in combating criminal groups and restoring peace.

He commended the efforts of Nigeria’s security and intelligence agencies, noting recent operational successes, including the reported neutralization of a high-profile ISIS-linked figure. According to him, such achievements demonstrate that the security architecture is actively working, even if the results are not yet fully reflected in all affected regions.

Despite these efforts, the President admitted that some communities still endure attacks from criminal elements. However, he offered strong reassurance that the government is not indifferent to their suffering. He declared that no Nigerian affected by insecurity has been abandoned or forgotten, and reaffirmed his administration’s determination to ultimately eliminate all forms of terrorism and banditry.

He further warned those responsible for violent acts to desist immediately, stressing that security agencies are intensifying operations and will ensure that perpetrators face the full consequences of the law. He reiterated that his government remains committed to creating a country where every citizen can live in safety, practice their faith freely, and pursue their livelihoods without fear.

Economic Reforms and National Recovery

President Tinubu also used the occasion to reflect on the broader economic direction of the country, linking the message of Eid-el-Kabir to the idea of sacrifice and long-term reward. He acknowledged that recent economic reforms introduced over the past few years have required significant patience and endurance from Nigerians, particularly in the face of inflationary pressures and cost-of-living challenges.

However, he maintained that these difficult measures are beginning to yield positive outcomes. According to him, the country is gradually moving beyond the most difficult phase of its economic transition. He described the current stage as one where the foundations laid through earlier reforms are starting to show signs of stability and growth.

The President expressed optimism that Nigeria is steadily positioning itself as a more attractive destination for foreign and domestic investment. He noted that increased investor confidence would eventually translate into job creation, improved infrastructure, and broader economic opportunities for citizens across different sectors.

He further assured Nigerians that the government will continue to invest strategically in key areas such as national security, infrastructure development, agriculture, education, and human capital advancement. These sectors, he explained, remain central to the administration’s long-term vision for sustainable growth and national prosperity.

Message of Unity, Mercy, and National Cohesion

Beyond security and economic matters, President Tinubu placed strong emphasis on national unity and social harmony. Drawing inspiration from the spiritual significance of Eid-el-Kabir and the story of Prophet Ibrahim’s devotion and willingness to sacrifice, he urged Nigerians to reflect on the importance of faith, obedience, and compassion.

He encouraged citizens to rise above divisions based on ethnicity, religion, and political affiliation, stressing that the strength of Nigeria lies in its diversity. According to him, the country can only achieve meaningful progress if citizens embrace tolerance, understanding, and mutual respect.

The President highlighted that the essence of the Eid-el-Kabir celebration goes beyond ritual sacrifice, pointing instead to broader moral lessons about empathy, generosity, and shared humanity. He called on Nigerians to extend kindness to those in need, support vulnerable members of society, and strengthen bonds within their communities.

He also issued a three-point appeal to citizens during the festive period. First, he urged Nigerians to remember their leaders in prayers, asking for wisdom and guidance for those in positions of authority. Second, he encouraged acts of charity and support for the less privileged, especially during the festive season when many families face financial hardship. Third, he called for stronger social cohesion, urging citizens to actively promote unity and peaceful coexistence across all regions of the country.

Public Holidays Announced for Eid Celebrations

To allow Muslims and other Nigerians the opportunity to fully observe the celebration, the Federal Government officially declared Wednesday and Thursday as public holidays. The announcement was made through the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who confirmed that the break would give citizens time to reflect, celebrate, and spend meaningful moments with family and loved ones.

The declaration aligns with the traditional recognition of Eid-el-Kabir as one of the most significant religious observances in the Islamic calendar, marked by prayers, animal sacrifice, charity, and communal gatherings.

A Message of Hope for the Future

As Nigeria joins the global Muslim community in marking Eid-el-Kabir in 2026, the overarching message from the Presidency is one of cautious optimism. While acknowledging the realities of insecurity and economic strain, President Tinubu emphasized that the nation is on a path of recovery and renewal.

He encouraged Nigerians not to lose faith in the country’s future, insisting that the sacrifices being made today will lead to a stronger and more prosperous Nigeria. According to him, unity remains the most powerful tool for overcoming national challenges and achieving lasting progress.

The President’s message ultimately reinforced a call for patience, solidarity, and shared responsibility as the nation continues its journey toward stability and development.
