The ongoing legal and political tension surrounding the detention and investigation of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has now expanded beyond the ex-governor himself, drawing in his immediate family and escalating into a fresh confrontation with Nigeria’s anti corruption authorities. In a new development that has attracted widespread attention, his wife, Aichatou El-Rufai, has formally issued a pre action notice to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, popularly known as ICPC, demanding ₦2 billion in damages over what she describes as defamatory and damaging public statements.
According to the notice issued through her legal representatives, Aichatou is alleging that the commission made remarks that were not only false but also intentionally harmful to her reputation. She insists that the statements released by the ICPC were capable of exposing her to public ridicule and have already caused significant harm to her personal and social standing.
The dispute originates from a press release issued by the ICPC on May 18, 2026. The statement, titled Clarification on the Access Control Protocol at ICPC Headquarters, Abuja, was intended to address concerns about visitation procedures at the commission’s facility following public commentary about access to the detained former governor. However, the contents of the statement have now become the centre of controversy.
Aichatou’s legal team argues that the language used in the press release went beyond clarification and instead portrayed her in a negative light. They maintain that an official government agency should not have used its platform in a way that allegedly undermined her dignity or called her credibility into question.
One of the main points raised by her lawyers is the manner in which the ICPC described her identity in relation to the former governor. The statement reportedly referred to her as a woman who identified herself as the wife of a defendant. Her legal representatives claim that this wording was unnecessary and deliberately structured to cast doubt on her marital status, which they argue is both established and widely known. They say this characterization exposed her to unnecessary public scrutiny and embarrassment.

Another major issue highlighted in the pre action notice is the allegation that the ICPC indirectly portrayed her as dishonest. The commission reportedly described some of her public statements as false and misleading. Her lawyers strongly reject this, insisting that such wording amounts to a direct attack on her integrity and personal character, especially given the wide circulation of the statement across both traditional and online media platforms.
The legal team also took issue with claims relating to alleged violations of visitation protocols at the ICPC headquarters. According to their response, Aichatou did not breach any established rules and was instead acting within her rights. They argue that suggesting otherwise paints her as someone who disregards lawful procedures and institutional authority, an image they describe as both inaccurate and damaging.
In addition, the pre action notice challenges the implication that she attempted to create what was described as a media spectacle around the situation. Her lawyers maintain that such a suggestion is unfounded and was intended to portray her as someone seeking attention rather than addressing legitimate concerns through appropriate channels.
The notice also addresses comments relating to earlier claims about her husband allegedly being denied food while in custody. According to the ICPC, there were contradictions in her statements on the matter. Her legal team disputes this interpretation, stating that the commission’s response was aimed at undermining her credibility and diminishing public trust in her words.

The lawyers argue that the combined effect of these statements has resulted in widespread reputational harm. They emphasize that the publication was disseminated across multiple media platforms, both locally and internationally, thereby amplifying the damage caused. In their view, the impact extends beyond public embarrassment to a broader erosion of her personal dignity.
As part of their demands, Aichatou El-Rufai is seeking a formal resolution within a strict timeframe. The ICPC has been given 14 days to comply with several conditions outlined in the notice. These include the issuance of a public apology, which must be published in at least three national newspapers as well as on the commission’s official website and social media platforms. The apology is expected to include a full retraction of the contested statements.
In addition to the apology, she is demanding the payment of ₦2 billion in damages, covering general, aggravated, and exemplary compensation for the alleged harm suffered. Her legal team has also requested a written undertaking from the commission, assuring that no similar statements will be made against her in the future.
Failure to meet these conditions within the stipulated period, according to the notice, will result in legal action being filed against the ICPC.

This latest development adds another layer to an already complex and high profile dispute involving the El-Rufai family and Nigeria’s anti corruption institutions. Earlier in the year, Nasir El-Rufai himself initiated legal proceedings against the ICPC, the Inspector General of Police, and other agencies, seeking ₦1 billion in damages following a raid on his Abuja residence.
During that operation, authorities reportedly claimed to have recovered electronic surveillance equipment, an allegation that was later strongly disputed by members of the family. In a public reaction shared on social media, his wife, Hadiza El-Rufai, dismissed the claim, stating that the items described as wiretapping devices were in fact old mobile phones and personal banking tokens that had no connection to any illegal activity.
With the former governor still facing detention and ongoing investigations, and now with his wife launching a substantial legal challenge against the ICPC, the situation has developed into one of the most closely watched legal and political disputes in recent times. The case continues to generate public debate, particularly around issues of accountability, due process, and the conduct of public institutions in handling sensitive investigations involving high profile figures.
